In the 12th century, Porte Saint-Martin was the western entrance through the 1.5-kilometre wall. If you take a stroll through the streets and alleys of Saint-Émilion, the only reference you’ll find to it is an inscription engraved in the wall of the street of the same name, bearing witness to the town’s history and gradual opening up.
